Indika Restaurant

Matt is always wanting to go eat Indian food, the one food I'm not a huge fan of.  In the past, I've gone to several places because of coworkers, but it's never been my favorite kind of food.  Being someone that eats a lot of vegetarian foods, you would think I'd be more inclined to Indian food, but no, not really.  I actually think the flavors are not bad, it's the textures I'm not a fan of.  However, I've had it enough to know I am not big on Indian food.  It's a little weird, but thinking back, I have on occasion chosen the Indian food at Whole Foods Market, but their Chicken Masala is not that great.

So today, Matt really wants to eat Indian food and I am feeling a little yielding so we decide, not Bombay this time, but Pondicherri.  However, on the way, he realizes he's been there many times and so we decide on something new that neither of us have tried, Indika.  I'm feeling a little adventurous so I tell him to lead on picking our dishes.  Together, we decide on the Blueberry Kale Salad (Spiced cashews, moong sprouts, Texas cheese, $9), Lamb Chops (3 small chops, $20ish), and the Vegetarian Tasting (5 dishes of their vegetarian best, $20).  By the time we finish submitting our order, our server comes out with a complimentary starter.  It tasted like pumpkin bread with yogurt, it was great!  Next our salad comes out, they go ahead and split the salad for us, very convenient, thank you chef.  The salad is nice, it's good.  All the different textures and flavors, very nice.  The lamp chops and vegtarian plate comes out...I am very impressed.  The lamp chops were so tender and good.  The vegetarian dish...loved it!  The textures and flavors were really complimentary and different at the same time.  I think every little dish had pomegranate seeds.  It was very good, I liked it all.  While we are paying the bill, our sever comes out and brings this warm shortbread cookie.  Oh my word, it was soooo good!  If they sold those somewhere, I would buy them.  I need to go back, it was so good!  If you would like to go, let me know, I would love to accompany you!

PS. I'm really liking my photos with my Nikon D7000.  It's a little inconvenient carrying it around, but anything for you all!

Kanomwan Thai Restaurant (Telephone Rd)

Ta da!  Here it is...finally...better photos!  After hearing over and over again about how horrible my photos are (From my iPhone, what do you expect!), I have finally conceeded and decided to take my big Nikon 7000 camera out with me on a new restaurant excursion...just for all of you...my followers.  But, I must comment...even though you all gripe about my horrible photos...if I take you somewhere new...don't be embarrassed when I bust out the big camera, as pictured here...see Chris hiding behind a menu.

The past few years I have really been into Thai food, probably since I went to Thailand a few years back.  I have my favorite places here, but a little while ago I was at Asia Market and ran into a client and he was saying there was this really authentic Thai restaurant, comparable to Asia Market and Thai Gourmet, located on Telephone Road.  Secretly, I knew I would never visit it because it's on the east side of downtown. But, I happen to make plans with one of my friends who works out that way and thought this would be a great opportunity to visit.  It was really weird, I was really excited to go.  I love hearing about restaurants by word of mouth.  It's the best way to discover new great restaurants!

The decor has a very authentic feel to it.  Not necessarily authentic Thai, but authentic because they're of that generation where their primary goal is to take a space and operate out of it and to focus on the food and not spend a lot of energy jazzing it up.  That's authentic Asian!  You definitely do not go there for the ambiance.

We ordered the Thai tea, which was good, the egg rolls (2), $1.95.  They were vegetarian and were excellent.  For entrees we ordred the Pad Ka Pao (stir fry chicken breast, garlic, onion, and basil leaves) $8.95, delicious.  Chris said he thought it was really tasty, but a tad to salty.  I didn't think it was salty and agreed it was really good.  It had good spicy flavor, but the portion was really small.  The Gang Kyo Wan Gai (special green curry chicken breast, basil leaves, bamboo shoots) $7.95 was just ok.  The Gai Pad Prig Phao (sliced chicken breast with chili paste and cashews) $8.95 was horrible.  It had such a very strong fishy taste to it, even Chris said so.  I could not eat it.  I was amazed I didn't spit it out.

Overall, I thought was it was a good option for Thai food, but the location makes it a little inconvenient to go to regularly.  The portions are small, and you definitely have to know what to order.  Side note, I asked our server to recommend dishes, I let her pick the third dish and that was the dish I could not eat.

p.s. if you're wondering what was up with the one side shot of my rear...Chris thought it was important to note that I was sitting on a napkin over the chair.  All I have to say is...hello, wearing white!

Mia's

I happen to see this place and on a lunch appointment to Carrabbas with Jodie Stocker.  But, we decided, beautiful weather, change of plans, Mia's, since they have a nice outdoor patio.  I ask the clerk what is the best thing on the menu, he says he likes the chicken sandwich.  So you know me, that's what I ordered.  It comes with the sweet potatoes.  I thought the sandwich was good, but I only ate half and packed up the rest for a possible late afternoon snack.  The crazy thing is when I had it for leftovers later, it was soooo good.  I went again with Matt and Ethan the next day.  Love that outdoor patio!

B-Cycle

I had heard about these rental bikes set up around Houston some time ago and I really just wanted to rent one because I knew they had baskets on them, so I could take the dogs out on a beautiful day. Well, I finally got a chance to rent it this weekend with Matt, Ethan and we brought the dogs of course. I wished I had taken a photo of us because it was so nice getting to do it. It's called B-cycle and it's a program that is being implemented in many Texas cities including San Antonio, Austin, and Houston. It's really neat, you just find a station you want to rent it from, choose how long you want to rent it for and then pay by credit card and it releases your bike! You can pick up from any of the station and drop off at any of the other stations. It's really cool, we rented from GRB and rode from downtown to UHD on bike trail and then to Target and back. It was such a nice day, there were a ton of people out and we got a lot of cool stares. For more information and bike stations, go to http://houston.bcycle.com/.

We liked it so much, we ended up going to Bike Barn and buying new bikes for us all!  Both Matt and I got these really fun Trek comfort bikes.  He just fell in love with the light pastel green with brown seat bike and I got the black one...just kidding.  We purchased a few extra accessories I got a wicker basket for the handle bars and a rack and a iron basket on the back for Cody.

We have not had a chance to ride them yet, but we are jumping out of our skin excited to this weekend!  Don't the dogs looks so excited about their new G-ride?!
